Visit to Iniya Udayam Trust, Avadi Chennai

Dear All,

Last weekend(29-Aug-2009) myself and athi visited Iniya Udhayam Charitable Trust, Avadi, Chennai. Iniya Udaiyam Charitable Trust was established in the year 2004 by Mrs. Komala Sivakumar and Mrs. Sujathaa Shekar. Working for “Literacy and social awareness , self-support , community health,  empowering and motivating the people to the betterment  of  society”.  Previously (Apr 2008-Jun 2008) we have deployed teacher to provide the spoken English for the students.  There are more than 100+ students benefited by the Iniya Udayam Trust. Now they have provided two requirement for us.

Requirement :
1. Provide salary for the staff of the Children Organization
2. Provide the roof in front of the current place. (Infrastructure)

Children Organization :
They are now forming one organization called ‘Children Organization’. The purpose of the organization to include the students as a member of this Organization.  The children’s will come forward and provide the problem they were facing in school, home or etc. They will meet periodically(Once or twice in a month) to discuss about the issue and take the necessary action. The staff of the organization have to introduce the students to the Organization and meet the respective head to implement the action for the issue.  Like a Grama shaba they will forming this organization for the students. They asked us provide the salary for the staff. Now they are paying Rs.3500 per month for the staff salary.  If we can’t able to pay whole amount for the staff, we can try to pay Rs.1500-2000.

The trust has the strength of more than 100+ students, the current place is enough to hold only maximum of 40 students only. So they will conducting the classes for the 10th students in their school itself, all other students have to come to the Trust. In Weekdays they will conducting class only in the evening, so the students can sit in the open space. In weekends they will conducting class from morning, so they have to sit in a small room.  They have requested us to provide the some roof (Shelter) in front of the building.  The approx cost of the infrastructure is Rs.20,000. Since we are providing help for the students education, I am not sure whether we can help them for the infrastructure requirement.

Iniya Udhayam visit

Hi Folks,

Nearly a month back, I visited Iniya Udhayam Charitable trust, to get to know about their requirements. Earlier, till Jul 2008, we had been supporting the home for their Spoken English class. And, after that, since the faculty was about to change, we stopped the service. Now, we wanted to review their progress and possibilities of our help required to their home.
I met Komala & Sujatha(those who started the trust). The trust is doing good now, as they get some regular funding from kind hearts. The following are their current activities.
1.They are running their own tuition centre for the students of Govt schools in the outskirts of Avadi.
2.They are running a computer centre, with the help of another trust, @ Avadi.
3.They deploy a teacher for the nearby Govt school, for 9th & 10th Std. (The school has been recently promoted as High School. And, the govt didn’t even appoint any new staff to handle 9th & 10th Std.) After appointing the teacher, they are able to see significant improvement in studies.
The following are the income & expenses…. (The exact amt may slightly vary)
The tuition centre has 3 staff, each is paid Rs.  pm. And, the school teacher is paid Rs. 1K pm. They can manage to pay the salary from a person, who donates regularly Rs 3K per month.
The computer centre is supported by Smile org. They have got one another sponsor for computer teacher too.

So, at present they don’t have any requirements for their current activities, as far as my assumptions. They have stopped the spoken English class, as they were unable to find an eligible faculty. Once they start it, they may need help. So, we can review one another time, and give support accordingly.

Visited Iniya Udhayam

28th Jul 2007
Visited Iniya Udhayam, Chennai, TN.

Hi Folks,

Last Saturday(28th Jul 2007), I visited Iniya Udhayam Charitable trust @ Avadi. Here we are supporting Spoken English class for poor students. 1st set of batch was over by May. As far as myself is concerned, the result was good. When, most of the students don’t know ABCD, making them to speak atleast few words in just 5 months is not an easy job. J  (Hope u all read my mail few months ago, reg the coaching of the faculty.) Mrs. Gayathri who was taking the class, is unable to continue, as she is pursuing her P.hd now. So, from Aug 1st onwards, a new staff is coming. He has finished 3 MA.(English, french and another one) He is a retired school teacher.

BTW, Iniya Udhayam has acquired new building(rental only) in Avadi. SMILE foundation has donated some computers for the home and also the syllabus. The syllabus is gud. Its prepared having poor plus two students in mind. It has four parts. 1. Spoken english, 2. Computer Skills, 3. Retail Marketting, 4. Gender Understandability. It’s a 6 months course. When I went thr, one of the trustee gave a topic in tamil and made them to act in english. The full conversation was translated by the students themselves and their performance was gud. Most of the students are drop-outs after plus two.

Now, they have two needs:
1. SMILE foundation ask them to arrange the faculty and payment. For spoken english class, we are already supporting them. For, computer faculty, they arranged a new staff. Apart 4m taking classes, he is in-charge of full administrative work. So, he demands Rs. 6000(Six thousand) per month.

2. For the new place also, they need to support their monthly rental. Rs. 6000(six thousand) per month.

At present, thr are no regular donors for the home apart 4m ourselves and one another grp(which provides supplimentary food). After they get regular donors for these two needs, they decided to start a tuition centre in the evening, for the govt school students in the nearby locality.

Hi,

On the way back to my home 4m Siragu, I visited Iniya Udhayam also. Actually, I didn’t plan it b4. So, cudnt meet the trustees. But, I conversed with the Spoken English teacher, to which course we support. She works as a professor in MOP.Vaishnava college. She takes classes here only in the week-ends. She is very much talented. Apart 4m her, her daughter also comes to classes then and thr out of her own interest. (She is doing only her 11th).

At first, I thought whether the salary is over for just the week-end classes. But, after seeing the performance of the students, I changed my mind. It has been only just 3 months shorter after the course started. But, by now, they are able to understand atleast what we speak, if its simple sentence and are able to reply in english. Of course in broken english. But, within 3 months, this seems to be a tremendous improvement.

The materials are prepared by the faculty by herself and are verymuch innovative. Like… She tells a word like sports, fashion, etc and asks them to collect the relevant paper cuttings and prepare a chart. And, she asks them to write a passage abt a topic in Tamil and asks them to translate into english. Like this for everyweek she prepares a new thing and distibute among the students. I am sure, the day when the students talk in gud english are not very far. J

I took some fotos and will send the link once I uploaded them.

Visit to Iniya Udhayam…

Last saturday I visited IniyaUdhayam Charitable Trust. Komala and Sujatha (sisters) started this org on Jan 2004. After finishing their course in CSIM, chennai, they started this org. (CSIM – Centre for Social Initiative and Management — http://www.csim.org/)

Activities:
— They are providing free tuition in the evening for the govt shool students nearby. Apart from this, they conduct some games like things in saturdays to increase the concentration power and other extra curricular activities.
— Nearly 70 students are studying there. Students are from 1st to 11th std.
— For this tuition they appointed 3 faculties. (Two from Arts & Science backround, another one from BE backround) They are providing tuition fee for those faculties.

— They are running one another centre in Ananda Nagar. 30 students are there. 1 faculty is taking care of them.
— Supplementary food is provided for 3 days per week.
— They conduct awareness camp, medical, dental camps also.

Needs:
— The current place they are residing is not considerably large enuf to hold that much students. They are shifting to a new place in December. After going there, they decided to start Abacus training & Spoken english training. For this, they are going to appoint faculties. They need fund for this project.
— Apart from this, they teach some basic computer functionalities too to the students, with the computer available with them. (They have one computer). But they feel a computer centre will serve the purpose fully.

My views:
As far as myself is concerned they are doing good work. Its a genuine org. We can support their education purpose. ie: like providing tuition fee for spoken english class or abacus training.
