BANGALORE Visited to Baale Mane, Gopalapura Girls Home

Hello all,

Last Saturday, 27 Feb 2010 Udhay and I visited “Baale Mane” and met Mr. Venkatesth, Ms Mary, Ms Bella and all the children in this home. The management was quite happy to welcome us and took us around the home to show the facilities. Also the children showed their talents by singing and dancing.

Total children: 57
They go to different Govt Schools nearby.

In High School: 8th – 8 students
9th – 6 students
10th – 4 students

From the initial look, with respect to infrastructure and facilities, this place looked quite good and neatly maintained. As Udhay mentioned previously they are getting regular funds from UK based charity trust and also has support from “Paraspara” trust in Bangalore.

We talked to the management and also the children about their educational needs. Most of the students required some tuition in the evenings to improve their knowledge and get good marks. Especially the need of tuition is in the subjects – English, Maths and Science. We have suggested the management to find a tuition teacher who can take tuitions to the students in the evenings.

During our visit, we noticed that “Baale Mane” has few Computers in their computer center and there is a computer teacher who is available some times. Since there is this problem of power not available and there is no UPS, this computer training is not regular.

We also noticed there is a small set of books in their Library. Since the children in “Baale Mane” has all age groups, most of the books are not relevant for Primary school students. Students also requested for some newspapers for daily read. Improving this library was one of the thoughts, by providing good books to all age groups of children.

Another thing we observed is that the requirement of Career counselling, as there are few students completing 10th std and II year PUC.

2. About This Home:

The Baale Mane (Baale Mane means “Girls’ home”) at Gopalapura is a home for around 65 girls between the ages of 6 and 16 situated on the outskirts of the city of Bangalore, India. Founded in 2001 by Paraspara Trust, an NGO dedicated to the eradication of the child labour system, and now owned by The Baale Trust, it provides shelter and a loving home for girl children. The girls are either orphans, have a single parent who is unable to care for them or have lost contact with their parents. Most of the girls have been rescued from domestic service, some have been found homeless in the streets by volunteers and others have been given shelter having been arrested by the police when living on the streets.

The Friends of Baale Mane Gopalapura, (“The Friends”) a UK charity set up in 2007 for the specific purpose of supporting the home over the long term. This trust helped to construct the home and helping to extend the building now.

All this student going to near by government schools.

3. Requirement:

I had discussion with management (manager and president) and two of the volunteers to understand education need. One point they raised, they need teacher to take care of this students in the evening. Currently they are all going to government school and no one in the home for follow up. But this home already getting some fund from UK charity trust. So I have to visit again and find there financial position to decide our support.
