Pondicherry: Visited to “Children of the Sun for Gypsy Community” – Valid reason for home

Dear Friends,
We (Senthil Kumar.P & Udhaya Kumar.V) visited to “Children of the Sun” , Unit-1&2, Pondicherry – 605 001. on 25-Jul-2009 & had discussion with M.Sundaraj.
1. Home Address:
Unit-1: No.11, Jayaram Chettiya Thottam, II Cross, Vanarapet, Puducherry – 605 001.
Unit-2: 126, Ottampalayam Road, Papanchavady, Puducherry – 605 110.
2. About this Home: Mr.Sundaraj.M working with Gypsy community from 1979 & he created awareness in the community on education, medical, etc. Mostly gypsy community people won’t stay at one place, always they will move to different place based on season and need. So they never send there kids to school & there is no concept of education in there community. But nowadays some of the family settled in some places and started sending there kids to government schools. But mostly its not continuing & end up with dropout only.
Mr.Sundaraj working with Gypsy from very long time, So he decided to provide education for Girl students from this community. He started his first home(Unit-1) for Gypsy Girl students in 2002 which was funded by some org from Holand. Second unit he started in 2008 which was funded by some France organizatoin.
3. FUNDING: currently they are running two units in two different places & funded by some foreign NGO’s. This foreign NGO’s providing house RENT & FOOD for this home. Nothing other then this.
4. Number of Students & Home Rent:
Unit 1 : 18 Girl students from 6th to 10th standard – Rs.6000 Per month rent.
Unit 2 : 43 Girl students from 1st to 5th standard – Rs.5000 Per month rent.
5. Education: currently all this students going to government Schools only.
6. Other Facility:
Nothing other then home, But happy to see this great initiative. They don’t have any concept of care taker in this home. They have one person to cook. Nothing other then this, any way students taking care of them.
7. Requirements
7.1 Need two black board for this home – Rs.3524
7.2 Need drawing materials for all students, Most of this students interested in drawing – Rs.3,020
7.3 Sports material (they don’t have any sports material, this students talking about caramboard, but they said they never seen) – Rs.4,148
7.4 One teacher for this home to teach in evening times – Rs.1000 Per month salary
8. Some Observation’s:
8.1 I feel, its perfect reason for home. Mostly it’s moving community, because of this home this girl students getting education. At lest this generation started going to school.
8.2 Good thing which I found  while interacting with these students. They are all really good in there education, mostly there rank will be 1-4.
8.3 I think first time I seen, More sincere and respectful humanitarian home students.
