Visit Report – Villages in AndhraPradesh

With the children in kammanavarapalli

With the children in kammanavarapalli

Date of visit: 16th n 17th March.

Members visited:

Jayasree From India Sudar , Arvind from SaiGM foundation.

Places of visit:

Villages around puttaparthi , including Kamanavarapalli ,puttagundapalli , brahmanapalli

Observations:

  • SaiGm trust is doing medical services to the villages around puttaparthi.
  • The medical checkups including eye n general health checkups happens regularly on a weekly basis.
  • After the medical camp , free food is distributed to the entire village.
  • These villages are well organised and have livelihood facilities. And key observation is they are not getting any support from theputtaparthi sai trust. As we will want to know i asked them why is not happening. To make it more clear , due to hierarchy and other politics involved the huge resources of sai trust are not channelised for the benefits of these students. However i guess we should be more keen on supporting them may be the sai trust will start supporting/enabling us later.
  • Education Related:

    1. There are govt schools in each of these villages upto 7th class.
    2. Putagundapalli however has only till class 5.
    3. Beyond that the children go to the near by townships to pursue their education.
    4. There are very minimum facilities here also as we have seen in most of the cases.
    5. The average school going children in each village may be around 75.
    6. The detailed break has been collected and sent to me by a volunteer in SaiGm.  Mr.pandu who is willing to be our filed cordinator who is also a localite there.

    What IndiaSudar can do.

  • We can make the school the part of Notebook drive. These kids do not have any sponsors to donate these things.
    1. Few schools definitely need a library. I have attached the image of a library, its a string in which couple of books are hanged.
    2. Teacher deployment can be done once we talk with the head master this however will come in a little later stage.
    3. There is computer centre the image of which i have enclosed. Its donated by a foreigner This is in a orphanage home and there are around 200 beneficiaries but there is no proper faculty. We have been requested (by Isaac*) to deploy a computer  teacher here for the next academic year. I seek the help of Sameer Kola to do this. I also have a sponsor who is ready to sponsor this activity. Sameer , please do get in touch with me.
    4. Most of the schools are till 5th std only and the students like in all village schools come bare foot and only one set of uniform provided by the govt. And there is NO local organisation supporting them. We can consider this.                                                                      I want mention about Mr.Isaac Trigett whom i met during this visit. He is the founder of Hard Rock cafe and he has donated in millions to the sai baba super speciality hospital. Now he is full time into service and is willing to partner with service organisation to find the right resources and enable the service oriented activities.          I am sorry for sending this out so late. I got busy with some other stuff.  I sincerly hope that we together team can extend our suupport these students and expand our service activities in andhra and create a very strong base here.  Link to photos : http://picasaweb.google.com/jjayasree/AndhraVillageVisit#5335203927305536386

Manidham sees education in a different perspective to make women be educated

    Hi Folks,

Last week, I visited Manidham Charitable trust. We are already supporting the centre with one of our “deploying teacher” project. They are providing education for the students in the slum areas near by Dindigul.
What are they going to do?
Now they are going to extend their support to Muslim women in and around Dindigul. As they believe, mothers only are teaching the children, and so, they need to be educated first. According to a survey by Rajendra Sachchar committee, in 2001, women literacy rate was 67% in India. But, muslim women literacy rate was only 51%.
    What are their plans?
To achieve their vision, they are going to start tuition centres for women, in the slum villages in Dindigul. For this they selected 20 villages and are going to work with like-minded ppl and orgs. They are going to tell how importance is child education, how to read, wirte using simple stories, etc.
    Expenses:
They need Rs. 750 p.m, as a salary for a teacher, for one village. So, it will come about 15K per month for 20 villages.
    What can we do?:
I directly interacted with some women in a slum area. The area itself was too bad, as they don’t have enough drainage, etc. And, when talking to them, they gave me assurity that if someone takes care of their children’s education, they are ready to send them to school/college. (Now, few of them are going to work). So, we can definitely support few villages, as their(Manidham) views are good and are showing real interest. The slum women also gave good opinion about Nisha & her work.
Apart from this, they need few computers too. They must have started their summer classes as of now and they feel it would be better, if they have at least 2 or 3 computers. (Currently there is only one)
If anyone is willing to support the education for women or donate computers, please send mail to admin@indiasudar.org

Saratha Sevaashram needs a computer centre

    Hi Folks,

    About the trustee:
Few weeks back, we(myself & Anitha) visited Saratha Sevashram, a home for orphaned and semi-orphaned children, run by Saadhu Yoga Kumar, who incidently a disciple of Swami Vivekananda. After finishing his studies @ Ramakrishna Math, he went to Himalayas, to know the truth of life. After few years, his Guru advised him to start his own service to the society and so he came back and started the orphanage. From that time, he is spending his time fullest to the society, by not even getting married. He is a yoga master and teaching yoga for corporates and earning nearly 20K pm, which is used to run the home.
    About the home:
The home is taken care by him and his parents. The home contains nearly 30 students and the home provides shelter & education for all of them. Boys are taken cared by his father and gals are taken cared by his mother. All children are in the age group of 6 to 15. They are studying in the govt school, situated opposite to that home. Tuition is arranged and he gets the money for tuition centre also.
    About the children:
This is one of the very few homes, which give value based education, such as Thiayagam. The students are well matured, they know how to speak with elders, they ask some unexpected questions, they do yoga regularly, etc. The trustee is really doing a fine job in developing the future generation.
    Requirements:
At present, they don’t have any requirements related to education. The trustee said he is getting enough money from the well-wishers. However, its getting delayed, to get the provision items. He meant like thou they get the money for provision, sometimes, its getting delayed.
    Our conclusion:
Saadhu yoga kumar is having good vision on his home and the near by poor students. He is having an idea to run a computer centre for the poor students in that village for free. So, we can have a computer centre there. As he is having a good vision, we believe he can able to handle the centre perfectly. Interested persons who wanna donate used computers, can contact Udhay.

    Iniya Udhayam visit

    Hi Folks,

Nearly a month back, I visited Iniya Udhayam Charitable trust, to get to know about their requirements. Earlier, till Jul 2008, we had been supporting the home for their Spoken English class. And, after that, since the faculty was about to change, we stopped the service. Now, we wanted to review their progress and possibilities of our help required to their home.
I met Komala & Sujatha(those who started the trust). The trust is doing good now, as they get some regular funding from kind hearts. The following are their current activities.
1.They are running their own tuition centre for the students of Govt schools in the outskirts of Avadi.
2.They are running a computer centre, with the help of another trust, @ Avadi.
3.They deploy a teacher for the nearby Govt school, for 9th & 10th Std. (The school has been recently promoted as High School. And, the govt didn’t even appoint any new staff to handle 9th & 10th Std.) After appointing the teacher, they are able to see significant improvement in studies.
The following are the income & expenses…. (The exact amt may slightly vary)
The tuition centre has 3 staff, each is paid Rs.  pm. And, the school teacher is paid Rs. 1K pm. They can manage to pay the salary from a person, who donates regularly Rs 3K per month.
The computer centre is supported by Smile org. They have got one another sponsor for computer teacher too.

So, at present they don’t have any requirements for their current activities, as far as my assumptions. They have stopped the spoken English class, as they were unable to find an eligible faculty. Once they start it, they may need help. So, we can review one another time, and give support accordingly.

India Sudar Awareness Campaign at New York

Awareness Campaign at Flushing, NY, USA

On 4th April 2009, Sathya Padmanaban and Sriram Raagavan had arranged a stall at the Ugadi Celebrations hosted by TLCA (Telugu Literary and Cultural Association) in New York. Our stall was held for about 6 hours (3 PM EDT – 9 PM EDT) and we exhibited the services undertaken by India Sudar to improve the current state of Education in rural India.

It is mention worthy that we had an overwhelming response from people who attended the celebration. They were not only attracted by the eye catching posters and statistics about the current literacy rate in different states of India but also have shown interest to know about India Sudar.

Children tried on interesting puzzles and Riddles and we offered them candies for every correct answer. Not only to engage the children, the fun session also made them understand how privileged they were with access to good education which many kids in rural India are not gifted with. While most children appreciated our good work, a few felt sorry for the underprivileged.

Among the mixed crowd ranging from school children, home making women, Professors, doctors, entrepreneurs, were two young boys Saikiran and Harsh Patel who were also impressed with this caption:

“Can You Read this?,,,, 30 Million Indian Kids Can’t”

These two boys, who remarkably had taken us by surprise with their initiative to pen down their thoughts on how to improve literacy in India, eventually came up with six useful ideas and we shared candies with them in appreciation. You may see their photo displayed in our web album and may also see their ideas written in their own handwriting by visiting our album at http://picasaweb.google.com/indiasudar/AwarenessCampaignAtFlushingNewYork#

The outcome of the stall was so promising in that we have had an opportunity to interact with a few people who are well established and keen to understand the services we provide at India Sudar. While thoughts like adopting a school or even starting a new school in rural India was welcome to some visitors, one of those suggested a restructuring of the scientific laboratory at the higher secondary schools in rural Andra Pradesh.

We have planned to follow up with these individuals to discuss our current projects and understand their expectations and ideas for good and to leverage the benefits of potential in both monetary and functional aspects.

With miles to go on, we still have a little while here to pause and celebrate our small achievement so as we thank all the India Sudar members and other volunteers who have made this campaign a grand success.

    Thanks

    India Sudar, Communications
