BANGALORE SCHOOLS : Govt. Tent School for poor kids, Thubarahalli and Asha Kiran, Devarabisanahalli for poor students needs our support

Dear All,

Thanks Mrs. Nagarathnamma, BEO took India Sudar KA Team to Govt Tent School and Asha Kiran schools for poor students in Bangalore on 31st Jan 2009.

Govt. Tent School, Thubarahalli.

It is not even 1 km from Marathalli -Kundalahalli gate, you could see big aparments and you could see a small 10×15 room size SHED covered by metal sheets and sorrounded by small tent homes. All are mostly construction workers and they live in those small tent homes.

The good things is that Karanataka Government has setup TENT schools (Under Sarva shikshana abhiyan) to benefit the children who cannot attend the regular schools.

The reason they cannot attend the schools is that they need to take care of their younger siblings, since their parents are out for work.

It was really shocking to see at this younger age they have a huge responsibility to take care of baby!!!!  Mostly the parents are construction workers who live in one place until the construction is complete and then move to next construction place.

They were all wearing dirty clothes and it is was really painful to see those kids and their living situation.

So, these tent schools are setup close to their living area, so that the children can bring their siblings also to the school.  dsc06943At this school, mostly the children are from Gulbarga and Raichur.

There are over 50 children under one roof.

Students: Boys – 20, Girls – 35
Government deployed ONE teacher and two volunteers for this school.
Small Children (Siblings who come with students) – 40

dsc06926Very intersting part was the interest shown by the children towards learning.

In a matter of just 2 months they are able to learn few letters in kannada, sing some rhymes.

Mid day meal scheme is also extended to this school. The students were very enthustiatic to come near to board and read their lessons.

When we came out of that tent school, group of boys approached me and asked for SCHOOL dsc06947UNIFORMS. May be, they all should have seen other rich boys going to normal schools with school uniform. I assured them to get school uniforms sometime.

There are further more requirements for these children:

1. There are no proper clothes. We can donate old clothes in good conditon.
2. No drinking water facility in school.  Parents bring some water for their daily purpose from about 1 km.
3. No toilet facilty in the school.
4. Stationery items like bags, writing pads (slates) and chalks.
5. Plates, Glass are required.

It is really hard to believe that such problems exist in Bangalore.  We can see huge apartment – Shriram Samruddi apartments, Varthurm Main Road just next to this tent school.
Honestly, we should do something for these students to get better education and minimum infrastucture.
If any of you willing to visit this place, here is the address

Address:
Tent School, Thubarahalli, Varthur Main Road, Near SKR Choultry, Bangalore.

Directions to reach this place : After marathalli junction -> Kundalahalli gate -> towards Varthur road. You need to take right towards Sriram apartments.

Asha Kiran, Devarabisanahalli

They have good infrastucture and better facilities compared to other home. So they don’t need anything immediately as of now.

Regards

Afther TENT School visit, BEO took us to another residential school for construction workers, orphans and semi-orphans. This is an NGO providing home to children with single parent or orphans.  Government is providing funds to this NGO – by providing the building and also Rs.. 10,000 per student per year.  Students go to regular Govt. schools and return back to this home.

These children are not going to school because of various resons as such taking care of siblings, parents dont have time to drop the child and bring them back.. etc. I spoke to the parents and convinced them how important schooling is .Now they are ready to send their children to school..
